ACQUISITION OF JAPANESE NATIONALITY / NATURALIZATION
ACQUISITION OF JAPANESE NATIONALITY :
According to the amended Japanese Nationality Law, a child can acquire Japanese nationality by birth and through acknowledgement.
Acquisition of Japanese nationality by birth could be made by reporting the child`s birth in the municipal office within 2 weeks from the time of birth and if born abroad within 3 months to prevent loss of nationality. Report of birth of the child born abroad can be made in Japan municipal office or through the Embassy of Japan in the country of birth.
We support the acquisition of Japanese nationality in cases when the birth of a child abroad (of married Japanese and foreign parents) was not reported within three months and the child lost his/her Japanese nationality.
We also support the acquisition of Japanese nationality after the child was duly acknowledged by his/her Japanese parent (for child born out of wedlock) and is under 20 years of age.
NATURALIZATION :
A person who is not a Japanese citizen, after meeting certain conditions (length of stay in Japan, conduct, livelihood, etc.), may acquire Japanese nationality through naturalization. To undergo naturalization, the permission of the Minister of Justice must be obtained.
